Galvin: Strong Turnout Expected, Particularly On-Cape

KA_MA Mass Primary Election Voting Orleans_2016 winter_030116_013BARNSTABLE – Turnout on Cape Cod is expected to be strong for this year’s election, due to the high number of local races to supplement the presidential election.

More than 1 million voters in the Bay State have already cast their ballots, taking advantage of the state’s first-ever early voting period. Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin said he expects a strong turnout statewide by the time all is said and done on Tuesday, with Cape Cod being particularly busy at the polls.

“On the Cape you have more local contests than any other place, in fact more than any other place,” Galvin said, adding that the Cape saw a “particularly strong” voter turnout during the early voting period.

In Dennis, the town clerk’s office reported that there were over 3,600 early voters and around 640 absentee ballots submitted, making up over 35 percent of registered voters in the town.

The town also averaged 50 voters per hour on the final day of early voting on Friday.

In Sandwich, 4,000 of the 16,000 registered voters in town took advantage of early voting, making up nearly 25 percent of the electorate.

Statewide, 21 percent of the electorate opted for early voting this year.

“Historically we’ve done 3 million [voters] in a presidential cycle, the question is will we do 3 million on Tuesday total? Now that we’ve had a million already vote, I’m encouraged,” Galvin said.
