Gates Open Today for Barnstable County Fair

EAST FALMOUTH – The gates open Monday afternoon at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds for the Barnstable County Fair.

The 173rd edition of the fair brings music, rides, attractions and fair food through Sunday.

Several musical acts will take the stage including Blood, Sweat & Tears with Bo Bice on Saturday night, along with the fan favorite World’s Largest Demolition Derby on Wednesday Night.

Fair Manager Wendy Brown says new grounds attractions have been added this year.

“One of them is called Waterbark and it’s a combination of dogs and humans with diving tricks in a large pool of water,” Brown said. “We are also bring in the Clydesdales this year.”

New additions also include a Team Demolition Derby and a Power Wheels Demolition Derby for kids on Tuesday night.

“I think why people come because there is something for everybody,” Brown said.

The Barnstable County Agricultural Society held the first fair in 1844 at the County Courthouse in Barnstable Village.

After a short stint in Marstons Mills the fair was moved to its current location in 1973.

The fair continues the traditional agricultural heritage of the region with juried agriculture and livestock exhibits, 4-H programs and a petting zoo.

Thursday evening will also include the presentation of scholarships.

“We award $35,000 to local kids and we do that every year,” Brown said.

Ground attractions at the fair also include the Beer Garden, Artisan Market and the Bike Stunt Show featuring BMX riders performing aerial stunts.

Other musical acts performing throughout the week include country band Parmalee, pop singer BJ Thomas, the real life inspiration for The Partridge Family, the Coswills and Christian rock band Building 429.

Admission to the fair remains $12 and includes all shows. The gates are open from 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, along with noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
