BOSTON (AP) — After less than two years in office, Gov. Charlie Baker has already cracked the $4 million fundraising mark, giving the Republican a formidable edge over any aspiring rivals.

Baker’s most recent report filed with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance shows he has banked more than $4.1 million in his campaign account for the first time. He had flirted with the $4 million mark in recent reports.

Baker is benefiting from a 2014 change in the state’s campaign finance laws which doubled the maximum annual allowable donation from $500 to $1,000. The change allows top politicians to more quickly build up their campaign coffers.

An earlier Associated Press review found more than 45 percent of all the cash Baker raised in 2015 came in the form of single $1,000 donations.
