BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker’s name won’t appear on the ballot again until 2018, but he’s quickly building a daunting fundraising edge over any would-be challengers.

The Republican’s most recent report filed with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance shows he is on the verge of socking away more than $4 million in his campaign account.

Baker is benefiting from a 2014 change in the state’s campaign finance laws which doubled the maximum annual allowable donation from $500 to $1,000, allowing top politicians to more quickly build up their campaign coffers.

Baker has easily been the biggest beneficiary of the change.

An Associated Press review earlier this year found more than 45 percent of all the cash Baker raised in 2015 came in the form of single $1,000 donations.
