BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker is planning to sign a bill aimed at helping cities and towns in Massachusetts.
The wide-ranging municipal modernization bill is designed to give cities and towns more tools to manage their affairs and cope with increasing budget pressures.
It’s also aimed at improving the partnership between state and municipal governments by eliminating or updating obsolete laws, promoting local independence, streamlining state oversight and providing municipalities with greater flexibility.
The Republican governor plans to sign the bill Tuesday morning at a Statehouse ceremony.
The bill is one of several approved by state lawmakers in the waning hours of their formal session on July 31.
Baker will be joined at the ceremony by Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera, Worcester City Manager Ed Augustus and North Andover Town Manager Andrew Maylor.
