Governor Baker Takes in Annual Cranberry Celebration

WAREHAM – Governor Charlie Baker was in Wareham over the weekend to participate in the town’s Cranberry Harvest Celebration.

The two-day event is held each year at the beginning of October to mark the start of cranberry harvest season and features food, live music, juried crafters, paddleboat rides, children’s activities, live cooking demonstrations, wagon rides, helicopter rides, and more.

The governor was on hand to watch the water harvesting and to speak with growers representing the commonwealth’s second largest agricultural industry.

“The Cranberry Harvest Celebration provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the Commonwealth’s official berry and this important and valuable part of our state’s economy and culture,” said Baker. “We encourage all residents to buy local and support their Massachusetts’ cranberry growers this season.”

Roughly 400, primarily small family farms, make up the Massachusetts cranberry industry which has an annual market value of $102 million, making up 20 percent of the state’s agricultural output.

Last year’s harvest produced 220 million pounds of cranberries and this year is expected to be similar, making Massachusetts second in the nation in cranberry production.
