Grammy Awards Will Have a Cape Cod Flavor Tonight

LOS ANGELES – The Grammy Awards to be handed out Monday night in Los Angeles have a Cape Cod connection this year.

Megan Trainor, who grew up on Nantucket and attended Nauset Regional High School, is nominated for Best New Artist.

Her songs “All About That Bass” and “Your Lips Are Movin’” rocketed up the music charts in the last couple of years.

The group Highly Suspect, which includes Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School graduates, brothers Rich and Ryan Meyer, and Johnny Stevens, is nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album.

Sam Hunt has made a splash on the country music scene — and is in position to do some damage tonight at the Grammys. He’s one of the nominees for best new artist.

He competes in that category against Trainor, Tori Kelly, Courtney Barnett and James Bay. Hunt is up for best country album for “Montevallo,” along with Little Big Town’s “Pain Killer,” Kacey Musgraves’ “Pageant Material,” and Ashley Monroe’s “The Blade.”

In the rap category, Drake has a Best Album nod among the five he has scored. His project “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,” is up against Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly,” Dr. Dre’s “Compton,” Nicki Minaj’s “The Pinkprint” and J. Cole’s “2014 Forest Hills Drive.”

Lamar, who leads all artists with 11 nominations, doesn’t have to be reminded that having the most nominations in a given year at the Grammys is no guarantee of success.

The history of the awards is full of artists who thought they might need a wheelbarrow for their haul — only to go home empty-handed or with just one or two.
