HYANNIS – Grandmothers Against Gun Violence hosted a candlelight prayer vigil this week to commemorate the anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
It has already been five years since the massacre where 20 first graders and six adult staff members were murdered in Newtown Connecticut.
“We started it because of Sandy Hook,” said Grandmothers Against Gun Violence President Patricia Hatch, “We found out it’s such a complicated issue. There’s killings, and shootings, and suicides. 60 percent of gun deaths are actually suicides.”
The somber Designated National Prayer Vigil Against Gun Violence is a national effort. On Cape the event was held at the First Baptist Church in Hyannis and included music, reflection, and a reading of each of the victims’ names.
“The sad part of it is, we are just starting reaching out to what they call the other side, but it is in the other side, because we really can’t do anything about gun violence until we reach the gun owners.” said Hatch.
Speakers included Reverend Kate Epperly, of the United Church of Christ; Margy Mahrdt, representing MOMs of Cape Cod; and a representative from Congressman Bill Keating’s office.
