Grant to Combat Nitrogen Pollution Awarded

HYANNIS – The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance has been awarded $100,000 to determine a strategy, through the Massachusetts Shellfish Initiative, to develop methods of combating nitrogen pollution in oyster beds.

The money is coming from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

The Alliance will partner with the Nature Conservancy, Mass Aquaculture Association, UMass Boston and the Division of Marine Fisheries along with many other stakeholders, including harvesters and growers.

Oysters are the third most valuable fishery in the state and hundreds of hopefuls are on waiting lists for grants.
