Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce Chair Brenna Sullivan
HYANNIS – The Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting Tuesday to look back on the year’s accomplishments and present awards.
The Patrick Butler Citizen of the Year award was presented to Rick and Jim Penn, who manage Puritan Cape Cod’s four locations.
The company was honored for giving back to the community through numerous charitable contributions and establishing the Abraham Penn Award.
Jim said it was an honor to receive the award.
“Being a good citizen, taking an active role in our community, helping out others who are less fortunate, doing the right thing and living our lives with high moral standards is part of our legacy taught to us by our grandfather, our uncles and our fathers,” he said.
Rick said it was an honor to have their names included on the list of past winners of the award.
“When it comes to community, success in business means going above and beyond,” Rick said. “Our grandfather would always say to us, to Jim and myself, ‘if you want to do business in the community you must give back to the community.’ And it’s all about setting a positive example in the community.”
Puritan Cape Cod has been in business for 98 years.
The John F. Kennedy Jr. Community Service Award was presented to Suzanne Carter of Flower Angels.
Flower Angels is made up of dozens of volunteers and individuals with disabilities who dedicate time to deliver flowers to those in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice care patients, rehabs and hospitals.
Carter said many people do not realize that 85 percent of people in nursing homes get two visitors per year and 60 percent never receive visitors.
“We have actually brought smiles to 30,000 people since we’ve been doing this in the last three-plus years,” Carter said.
Business of the Year awards went to Lamb and Lion, under 25 employees, and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, over 25 employees.
The Henry C. Farnham Unsung Hero Award was presented to William Murphy who has created several local fundraising events.
Brenna Sullivan, the Chamber’s president, also recognized the work done by departing executive director Jessica Sylver.
