HYANNIS – The Greater Hyannis Civic Association held their annual picnic event on Wednesday evening at Kalmus Beach.
A number of classic cars lined up in the parking lot and the snack bar served free chowder to attendees.
Members of the association also took the time to discuss a new program to create neighborhoods in Hyannis.
The group is re-titling itself as an Association of Neighborhoods.
“Hyannis is so diverse and so our goal is to build neighborhoods and provide the tools that no neighborhood alone can probably get,” said Association President Deb Krau.
She adds that where there is shared ideas, the Association can get the attention of the town quicker than any single neighborhood could, which creates a stronger and more vocal Hyannis.
Four areas have already stepped up to become neighborhoods, according to Krau.
“We need to build viable businesses that residents want to go to also, we need to keep the social services from getting into our neighborhoods and we need to work together to make Hyannis a very, very strong village.”
Krau believes that with more market-rate housing and a concerted effort from all residents, Hyannis can be the crown jewel of the Cape.
