A groundbreaking was held at the crumbling site Wednesday.

The Falmouth Economic Development Investment Corporation signed a 99 year lease with the state Department of Transportation in the spring to complete renovations of the station, with the state promising reimbursements.

Falmouth State Representative David Vieira attended the event.

“This station is over 100 years old when it served as the Falmouth Rail Depot and now as the bus station, we are prepared to invest a $1.4 million renovation,” said Vieira.

Renovations for the facility include a repaired roof, landscaping work and new windows and doors.

The station will be closed until the spring but services will be relocated to a portable trailer near the site.

Nantucket State Representative Tim Madden said now is the time to fix the station.

“It’s a sin what’s happened to this building, shame on us, legislators, administration, for allowing it to happen,” said Madden. “But we decided we’re going to do something about this, this building deserves better and now it’s finally going to happen.”
