Gun Violence Documentary Screening to Benefit Student Prevention Efforts

DENNIS – Eleven organizations on Cape Cod are sponsoring the upcoming screening of a documentary film which examines gun violence in the United States.

“Making a Killing: Guns, Greed & the NRA” analyzes gun violence in the several areas, including domestic abuse, the gun trade and gang violence, accidental deaths from unsecured firearms, suicide and mass shootings through survivor’s stories, comments from politicians and NRA officials, and police footage and audio.

“People are really concerned,” said Kathleen Schatzberg, an event organizer, the former president of Cape Cod Community college and member of Call to Action Cape Cod. “Things seem out of control on the gun violence front.”

Schatzberg said the recent efforts by young people to push for gun reform is inspiring.

“[They] are seemingly leading the way while their elders failed to solve the problem,” she said.

The film will be screened April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Cape Cinema in Dennis and will be followed by a panel discussion.

Tickets are $10 with a portion of the proceeds to support projects or activities by students to help prevent gun violence.

“We hope that everybody will be energized to talk to their friends and neighbors and to advocate for legislation that is very sensible and does not undermine anybody’s second amendment rights,” Schatzberg said. “It just puts the breaks on.”

“It’s pretty raw, this film,” she said.

The film is intended for a mature audience. Some of the descriptions of gun violence have the potential to re-traumatize survivors. Organizers said the film is not appropriate for children.

“People who have been victimized by gun violence may want to think about whether they really want to sit through this,” Schatzberg said. “They know this story personally already.”

Organizations sponsoring the event include: Call to Action Cape Cod, the Cape Cod branch of the NAACP, Cape Cod Fellowship of Reconciliation, Church Women United of Cape Cod, Grandmothers Against Gun Violence, Independence House, League of Women Voters, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Veterans for Peace, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and the Zion Union Heritage Museum.
