GettyImages_477484225WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials said a gunman is in custody after firing shots in the U.S. Capitol complex. Visitors and staff were shut in their offices and told to “shelter in place.” Initial reports from Capitol officials said a police officer had been injured, but that information was contradicted by subsequent reports.

UPDATE AT 5:00 p.m. – Officials at the U.S. Capitol say a gunman was shot and wounded at the Visitors Center after pulling out a weapon. The suspect is said to have been known to authorities because of previous contacts. The incident is being described as a “criminal act,” not an act of terror. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he is undergoing surgery. His condition is unknown. A female visitor suffered a minor injury.
