BREWSTER – Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod hosted a meeting last night to officially kick off their new project in Brewster.

A packed crowd was on hand at Brewster Baptist Church as volunteers, past Habitat home recipients, and organization officials spoke about the importance of the group’s impact on the community.

This latest project will eventually include 14 homes in a new development located off Tubman Road. Planning for the project started in 2012 and now construction is set to begin on the first six.

The six families, who each spoke at last night’s event, were chosen from about 80 applications for the mix of four, three and two-bedroom homes.

Cam Wilson and her two children are among the families who will be moving into one of the Phase I homes, “There are not enough words I can find to say how grateful I am, how blessed I am. I have dreamed about owning my own home.”

The single family homes start at $126,000 and go up to $151,000 and eligible owners have to be at or below 65 percent of the area median income. Each adult living in one of the new homes is required to commit at least 250 hours of sweat equity, working with volunteers to build their new home.

Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Vicki Goldsmith said these homes won’t be small.

“It will be a mix of two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and one four-bedroom home all volunteer-built Habitat for Humanity homes,” said Goldsmith.

The property, formerly Bassett’s Wild Animal Farm, was approved for purchase at town meeting last year and is 17 acres.

Goldsmith said there’s a special meaning behind building on the property of the popular former Cape attraction.

“There’s a special joy knowing that, that particular property will continue to have a use that’s really important to local families,” said Goldsmith.

The rest of the eight homes are scheduled to be built beginning in 2018 with the entire project completed by 2021.

The homes on this project will be part of Habitat of Cape Cod’s Green initiative, with each sporting a southern exposed roof ready for solar panels and will also utilize heat pumps.

The 14 units will be located on a winding entry road, set back from Tubman Road, on a street which will be named in memory of Paul Hush, a local community leader and housing advocate, who himself volunteered on a number of habitat projects.

Hush’s widow Joanne spoke last night about how thankful her husband would have been, “When Vicki called me to tell me that his name had been chosen to have this honor of this habitat project I think I cried, but I thought that Paul would be so honored but also humbled, he was really a very modest person.”
