HARWICH – Harwich’s Board of Selectmen recently endorsed a regulatory agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, allowing an eight-lot subdivision project to move forward.
The parcel along Route 28 in West Harwich will include six new homes, and the historic Judah Chase House and adjacent barn will undergo transformations as well.
“Within the Chase Home the use of three apartments was allowed through the ZBA approval and further, the Chase Home needs to have the exterior restricted with a historic appearance,” said Vikki Goldsmith, Habitat for Humanity Cape Cod Executive Director.
The town has already committed $240,000 for the purchase of the land, and when it comes time to build, locals will be given preference.
“Up to 70 percent may be awarded with a preference for people living, working or attending school in the Town of Harwich,” said Goldsmith.
On-site work is expected to begin sometime next year.
Habitat has completed construction of 12 homes in Mashpee, Yarmouth and Chatham in 2017. In August, they began volunteer construction on 6 new homes on Paul Hush Way in Brewster.
They’ll also begin construction on 3 homes in Truro this year.
