Habitat For Humanity Project Receives Harwich Selectmen’s Support

habitat for humanity logoHARWICH – Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod has asked Harwich selectmen for $240,000 for the purchase of property on which they plan to build 6 homes deemed affordable.

The proposed site for 93/97 Route 28 is in West Harwich and would also involve oversight from the housing authority and affordable housing committee.

Habitat homes involve the prospective buyers to put in “sweat equity,” which puts them to work in the actual construction phase.

Habitat has negotiated a sales agreement for the land with the Harwich Ecumenical Council for Homeless, which owns it currently.

The affordable housing town account currently does not quite have enough to pay the full amount, which the board recognized and stipulated that the full amount would have to be procured before funds are given.

Director of land acquisition and permitting for Habitat for Humanity Leedara Zola said that Habitat would not purchase the property until the project is fully permitted.

Part of that process requires approval from the state, which is where the project’s next step will arise from.

The board of selectmen are considering concerns from neighbors of the land until the funding and permitting is secured.
