MARSTONS MILLS – The walls were raised this weekend in Marstons Mills for the four newest Habitat for Humanity homes being built on Cape Cod.
The four three-bedroom homes will be built off River Road on the new road Dickinson Drive, named after the late Donald S. Dickinson, of Sandwich, who was a long-time volunteer and donor for Habitat Cape Cod.
Vikki Goldsmith, the executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, thanked those who helped make this project possible.
“We’ve worked very hard to get to this point and we are thankful to the volunteers who helped us prepare for this day and to some major contributors whose grants and donations have allowed us to purchase the land and develop the road and utilities,” Goldsmith said.
Habitat Cape Cod’s Director of Resource Development Wendy Cullinan says the project is receiving tremendous support from the community.
“We are currently fundraising for these four homes in Marstons Mills so we hope volunteers and donors will want to get involved with Habitat,” Cullinan said.
When completed, the four affordable homes will bring the total number of habitat builds on Cape Cod up to 139.
The homes will be sold for $147,750 to owners who will also commit to 250-500 hours of sweat equity.
Cullinan said the homes are life changing for families.
“Families are living on Cape Cod in some pretty sad situations – double or tripled up with other families in a one or two-bedroom home,” Cullinan said. “They are just trying to get by and pay their bills and pay for childcare.”
The mortgages for habitat homes are around $650 to $750 per month which save many families who are paying upwards of $1,200 to $1,500 per month for rental properties.
“That extra money makes their life so rich and the things that they can do with their children and with their families to truly enjoy life here on Cape Cod,” Cullinan said.
Currently, 127 habitat homes have been built on Cape Cod. Habitat is also finishing up nine home which were started last year – six of the homes are in Brewster and three are in Truro.
Walls will also be raised this fall for three more homes in Dennis.
