HAC Making Last-Minute Push for Volunteers Before Falmouth Big Fix

HYANNIS – The Housing Assistance Corporation is making a last minute push for volunteers for the Falmouth Big Fix ahead of the event on Saturday, September 16.

Currently, HAC has 288 volunteers that have signed up, but they are looking for more.

Now in its eighth year, the annual day of service assembles over 200 volunteers who make small home improvements for income-eligible seniors, veterans and disabled homeowners.

“That’s just a huge, huge help to these homeowners and they’re simply not at a point in their lives where they can either do that work themselves physically or they don’t have the financial means to do it,” said HAC Volunteer Coordinator Mary Everett-Patriquin.

This year, HAC received a record 65 applications from homeowners seeking to be chosen as Big Fix recipients.

HAC will only choose between 12 and 15 homeowners who will benefit from the work, but the number of homes chosen is contingent on the number of volunteers who sign up for the event.

“All those folks are people who are just coming out to spend half a day to help their neighbors in need and that’s just a remarkable thing to witness,” said Everett-Patriquin.

HAC is seeking both skilled and unskilled volunteers who are willing to donate a few hours to work on projects such as landscaping, trash removal, plumbing and exterior painting.
