HYANNIS – Housing Assistance Corporation is seeking applications for the 10th annual Big Fix-a-Thon which returns to Barnstable in the fall.

The Big Fix brings hundreds of volunteers to the homes of seniors, veterans and the disabled to make small home improvements and provide yardwork.

“Applications are live right now,” said Dave Quinn, HAC’s Director of Housing Development & Planning.

HAC is accepting applications from residents of Hyannis and Centerville.

“We are focusing on those two villages this year,” Quinn said.

Barnstable hosted the first Big Fix event in 2010 and since then, it has been held in Sandwich, Dennis, Mashpee, Yarmouth, Bourne, Brewster, Falmouth and Harwich.

“Once we get all of the applications we have a review committee that sits down and reviews the projects based on need and what type of project they are so we can team up volunteers and skilled handymen to help get some of the projects done,” Quinn said.

Quinn encourages Hyannis and Centerville residents to apply even if they are unsure if they qualify.

Applications can be found online at haconcapecod.org, HAC’s Hyannis office, Barnstable Town Hall, the Barnstable Senior Center, and town libraries. They can also be found at the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Veterans Services Department in Hyannis, and Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands in South Dennis.

The deadline to apply is June 14.

Quinn said around 15 homes will be chosen as Big Fix recipients.

The projects range from simple yard cleanups to more extensive repairs which require help from professional contractors and builders.

“We don’t really know what types of projects we are going to do until we actually get the applications in,” Quinn said.

Quinn said HAC is also seeking volunteers for the event on October 5.

“You don’t have to be a highly skilled builder to be a part of this,” Quinn said. “You don’t have to have skills at all really other than show up and be willing to work hard.”

All individuals are welcome to sign up as a volunteer at haconcapecod.org.

Quinn said participants can serve as a hands on volunteer or a fundraising volunteer.
