HAC Seeks to Rent Home in Falmouth to Support Homeless Individuals

FALMOUTH – A Cape Cod organization which works to ensure all residents in the region have safe and secure housing is searching for a home to rent in Falmouth.

Housing Assistance Corporation is seeking a four or five-bedroom home to support five chronically homeless individuals with the rent to be paid for by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The property may include more than one building.

“This is a part of our bigger plan to try to decentralize services for homeless individuals throughout Cape Cod,” said Laura Reckford, the director of community relations for HAC.

“We’d love to do this in all 15 towns on the Cape.”

The grant of more than $81,000 was originally intended for Martha’s Vineyard, but HAC was unable to find a home on the island to rent.

The grant also includes services and case management for the five individuals who would live in the home.

“The idea is to link those clients to supportive services whether they need mental health, substance abuse, help finding a job or other services,” Reckford said.

The home would also link to a homeless prevention program already underway in the town through Falmouth’s Human Services Department.

“We know there are people coach surfing, doubling and tripling up with friends and family and this helps to ease that problem of homelessness that we see really throughout the region,” Reckford said.

HAC is seeking to rent the home for a whole year with the ability to continue on a year-to-year basis as long as funding is secured.

“Typically when a program is successful they do continue to fund it,” she said.

The rent would be guaranteed for the year from the government funds.

Falmouth residents interested in renting their home should contact HAC’s Cassi Danzl by calling 508-771-5400 extension 253, or by emailing [email protected].
