HAC’s Big Fix Program Coming To Harwich

HARWICH –  – Housing Assistance Corporation of Hyannis chooses a  community each year for their one day Big Fix Program, and this year it’s Harwich.

HAC’s Chief Development Officer Ann VanVleck recently spoke to the town’s board of selectmen, starting with a quick overview of who they are.  “We’re a 43 year old agency.  We serve all 15 towns and the Islands with programs and services, providing safe, stable housing for people in need,” she said.

Team leaders and volunteers will make improvements to the homes of seniors, the disabled and veterans.  These include small home repairs, landscaping and general cleanup.

The recipients are income-eligible homeowners who need work that otherwise would not get done.

Now in its ninth year, the Big Fix program has assisted more than 100 households in nine communities across the Cape. More than 1,300 volunteers have participated through the years. This year The Big Fix will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22.  VanVleck said they are still in need of team leaders, sponsors and volunteers to help make the program successful.

HAC’s year-round work is much more involved, and VanVlek says Harwich has been a hot spot.  “Last year we served over 170 households in Harwich.  That includes home ownership, counseling, rental assistance, homeless prevention, energy conservation and improvements.”

Big Fix applications and volunteer sign up are both available at www.HAConCapeCod.org.

The application deadline is June 1st, at which point HAC will send out a professional team to assess which properties are most in need.
