Harbor Front Restaurant Idea MovesForward

HARWICH – A restaurant with a long-term lease is being considered by Harwich. The proposed location is at the knoll overlooking Saquatucket Harbor and the town-owned marina.

One inquiry has been received from a party interested in a public/private partnership.

Waterways Committee chairman Matt Hart says the town would avoid being involved with most of the work, while reaping the benefits. “They would lease the land, design and build the building, design and install the septic system, and manage the facility. The town would get revenue from the lease, building taxes and meal taxes.”

The initial idea was for a sixty seat establishment, but Hart informed the town administer and the chairman of the board of selectmen that there has been interest in one with 100 seats.

He expressed his commitment to a high quality restaurant with stunning views, and the town receiving very favorable terms.

Town Administrator Christopher Clark points out that the residents will have their say. “The board of selectmen is responsible for the site and would have to bring something back to town meeting.”

If the larger capacity restaurant is approved, a 30 year lease may be necessary. It would most likely be seasonal.
