Harbor Hawks Name Gary Calhoun New Field Manager

HYANNIS – Gary Calhoun has been named field manager of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks after 35 years of baseball coaching experience.

“I’m honored to be joining Hyannis and work with some of the elite players in the country with the Cape League,” said Calhoun.

“Looking forward to getting up there and working with our coaches and people in the organization and community.”

Calhoun replaces long-time Harbor Hawks mentor Chad Gassman, who departed Hyannis to become the athletic director at Waldorf University in Iowa.

Under Gassman, the Harbor Hawks captured three West Division titles and was named Cape League Manager of the year in 2011 while working alongside then general manager and current league VP Bill Bussiere and current general manager Tino DiGiovanni.

Last summer, Calhoun managed the Keene Swamp Bats to the 2019 New England Collegiate Baseball League championship and brings with him the recognition by peers as a top college coach over the past three plus decades.

“Garry Calhoun brings vast coaching experience, a wealth of baseball knowledge and a positive national reputation,” said Harbor Hawks General Manager Tino DiGiovanni.

“It’s the beginning of a new Hyannis Harbor Hawks chapter.”

Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Calhoun played for Florida Southern College, winning a national championship in 1976.

After graduating, Calhoun spent several years playing pro baseball and coached several New York Yankees’ Minor League teams from 1997 to 2006.

Additionally, he spent time coaching in the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers minor league systems among many other coaching positions he has held over the last 35 years.
