HARWICH – The Harwich Conservation Trust is sponsoring a series of winter discussions focused on a series of wildlife, cultural, and nature-based topics.
The talks begin in the new year and will be held at the Harwich Community Center.
The first discussion is titled “Cuba: Beyond the Tourist Experience.” Attendees will learn about the wildlife that inhabit the island, the traditional food dishes Cubans enjoy, and how the island’s history connects to the culture history of Cape Cod. The event is planned for Saturday January 6th.
On January 13th, outdoorsman Mark McGrath will discuss the highlights of hiking on the Outer Cape. An event on January 27th will focus on sharing nature and the outdoors with children.
Step back in time on February 3rd to relive New England’s storm of the century. “Digging Deep into the Blizzard of ‘78” will look back at the 40th anniversary of the storm that buried Massachusetts and Rhode Island in 4-feet of snow with 15 foot snow drifts. Presenters will talk about the hurricane-force winds that slammed Cape Cod and carved out a new landscape on the Outer Beach.
The discussion on February 10 will look into how climate change is affecting the birds of Massachusetts. The event will be put on by Mark Faherty of Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
On February 24, attendees will learn about the importance of bats to our local ecosystem and the conservation efforts surrounding the species.
All the events begin at 2 p.m.
