Harwich Conservation Trust Looks for Volunteers for Beach Cleanup

litterHARWICH PORT – The statewide COASTSWEEP Beach Cleanup is underway through mid-October and efforts are being made across the Cape.

The Harwich Conservation Trust and the town’s Natural Resources Department are looking for volunteers to help clean the area around Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port.

The cleanup will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 9 to 11:30 a.m., weather permitting.

Robin Lacey, with the state’s office of coastal zone management, says anyone can participate as most of the trash includes cigarettes, plastic bottles, cans and Styrofoam cups.

Last year’s COASTSWEEP collected over 6 tons of trash from beaches, rivers, ponds, marshes and the seafloor.

In Harwich, about 30 volunteers removed 200 pounds of trash from the shores along Nantucket Sound and Pleasant Bay.

The conservation trust asks that volunteers wear sturdy shoes and bring their own gloves. Trash bags and some gloves will be provided.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Harwich Conservation Trust at 508-432-3997 or by email at [email protected] by October 1.
