HARWICH – The Harwich Conservation Trust will hold an event Saturday afternoon that will give the public an opportunity to learn about Henry Beston and the Outermost House.

Beston, a writer and naturalist, is best known for his 1928 book, “The Outermost House.”

Beston wrote the classic book after spending a season on the dunes of the Cape’s Outer Beach upon returning from World War I.

Co-founder and Executive Director of the Henry Beston Society Don Wilding will be making the presentation which will provide background information on the writer, the house and Beston’s contribution to the awareness of the Cape’s environment.

Wilding says Beston meditated on the rhythms of waves, observed the migration of birds and braved the winter weather while using his 20 x 16 foot dune top cottage.

The Outermost House was cited by the National Park Service as one of the reasons the Outer Beach should be preserved.

The event will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Harwich Community Center on Oak Street.
