Harwich Continues Outreach with Bag Ban in Effect

plastic bagsHARWICH – Since June 15, Harwich has prohibited the use of thin single-use plastic bags, and the town continues to make local businesses aware of the regulation.

The bylaw was voted on by residents at the 2015 town meeting, and businesses have had a year to prepare for the change.

“I sent out notices to all of the permit holders through the Harwich Health Department, we have over 500 separate licenses so we’ve been trying to do some outreach,” said department director Paula Champagne.

In addition the town has met with groups and posted signs around the town, notifying people that the ban is in effect.

The outreach will continue for the moment, however as time goes on, enforcement will increase.

“If after some period of time there’s just a business that refuses to cooperate, then we’d have to think about some action, but there is a provision for a fine,” Champagne said.

There is a $50 fine for a first offense, $100 for a second offense, and $200 for a third and subsequent offenses.
