HARWICH – A number major projects have pushed the Town of Harwich’s capital plan requests to nearly $39 million.
Efforts including the implementation of new wastewater infrastructure, the replacement of the East Harwich Fire Station, and various roadway projects have pushed the fiscal year 2019 requests to the atypical high.
The capital requests are part of the town’s seven year, more than $86 million campaign, which see declines following year one.
Projects featured under the plan include $22.5 million for wastewater management, covering both design and construction. The project at the East Harwich Fire Substation could exceed $6 million, in addition to roughly $700,000 for new fire equipment.
The town also intends to lay out $4.5 to maintain and resurface Lower County Road.
“Some of these things too are concepts,” said Clark, “So I think that there are some things for the board to think about over the next month or so to see, a final decision on these will be made when the final report is issued.”
Additionally, taxpayers are being asked to spend more than half a million dollars on mitigation projects at Hinckley’s Pond, and roughly the same amount for a pet cemetery and animal crematorium. Plus another $300,000 for renovations to the exterior of the Brooks Free Library.
“A pet crematorium, which is a building we go with the pet burial facility,” explained Clark, “So the building was valued at $486,000 and almost $92,000 for the unit.”
Clark told the selectmen that the plan represents the “first crack at what’s been submitted” and may well change following further consideration.
