Harwich Pet Cemetery Plans Placed On Hold

HARWICH – Plans for a communal pet cemetery and crematory in Harwich have been sent back to the drawing board, as financing for construction of the new property has hit some roadblocks.

“The project was never put on the capital plan as required for projects that are estimated to be over $50,000 in value,” said Bob Lawton, Interim Assistant Town Administrator for Harwich.

“I think this occurred because the initial estimate of the project was between $35-$40 thousand dollars. Once the project rose close to and then went over those amounts, hitting over $60,000,” he said.

“It should have been put on hold, and then discussions should have been held with the commissioners, the town administrator, and the selectmen to see how this should proceed,” said Lawton.

Although work on this new 2.25 acre cemetery has already begun, the project has come to a halt since May. This however does not mean that town officials are looking at other ways to try and finance this project.

“Recommendations include going through the capital budget process, thus developing a funding source for the project,” said Lawton.

Funding originally used to begin this project came from a revolving fund allotted back in 2010.

At this time the town will review all options to see the best way to make this concept a reality.
