Harwich Port Woman Gives Birth in Police Station Parking Lot

KA_Dennis_police 32_11713DENNIS — A Harwich Port woman and her newborn baby are resting comfortably after a dramatic delivery in a car seat in the Dennis police station parking lot.

Mary Walker wasn’t due until Wednesday, but started having contractions on Sunday and knew it was time.

As her mother was driving her to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, they realized the baby wasn’t going to wait.

That’s when they called 9-1-1 and headed to the police station where officers Liz Tucker and Krista Wunderlich were waiting.

“The biggest thing was just assessing the mother-to-be, the condition that she was in, how far along the contractions were, making sure the fire department was updated and they knew what was going on,” said Tucker.

Tucker said they kept mom comfortable until Dennis paramedics arrived, just seconds before baby Ella arrived.

“The fire department got there as close as they could. They arrived, and as soon they got there the baby was born and they were able to step in and do what they do on the medical side,” said Tucker.

Both mom and baby were doing well Sunday at Cape Cod Hospital, with a great story to tell for years to come.
