HARWICH – The town of Harwich this week completed the purchase of the Downey property, a parcel on Route 28 abutting the town’s marina and parking lot on Saquatucket Harbor.
The town paid $825,000 for the 2.2-acre parcel.
Linda Cebula, vice chairman of the Harwich Board of Selectmen, said the purchase will serve to increase access to the harbor for Harwich residents.
She said the town wanted the property, “because it’s going to increase our ability to provide services for residents and boaters and visitors. We’ll have expanded parking. We’ll be able to overall make better use of the property and enhance the way that the town looks.”
Cebula said the parcel used to be a gas station and later a pizza shop but has been vacant for some time.
A conceptual planning document prepared by Cape Cod Commission staff that illustrates possible uses for the site, shows that it can expand the town’s parking at the marina by about 75 spaces. It can also serve as a site for, the plan states, “educational establishments, artist kiosks and fish and produce markets.”
