HARWICH – The Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management has awarded a $187,500 Coastal Resilience Grant Program award for the Saquatucket Harbor landside project.
That money will be used to help with the planning, engineering and permitting landside improvements proposed at the harbor.
“Right now we’re really trying to revitalize it both on the water side and the land side, and also make it much more attractive, not only to boaters but the general public as well,” said Harwich Conservation Administrator Amy Usowski.
Town officials learned recently that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers need more dredge spoil testing for the waterside reconstruction and dredge project.
The Army Corps also said that they would need up to six months to complete 408 permitting for proposed new structures in the federal anchorage area that makes up some of Saquatucket Harbor.
Voters approved $250,000 in May at annual town meeting for the landside project’s planning and permitting and the town’s matching contribution is $62,000.
“This is a great opportunity to see if instead of using all of town funds, we can get this grant and we applied for it and we were very lucky to get it ,” said Usowski. “Saquatucket Harbor is one of the premier harbors on Nantucket Sound.”
The town is currently accepting bids for the project and hope to start construction next fall.
