Harwich Selectmen Allow Alcohol Sales at Saquatucket Snack Shack

HARWICH PORT – The harbor management plan in Harwich has been amended to allow the sale of beer and wine at the Dockside Seafood Shack at Saquatucket Harbor.

Selectmen voted 3-2 to make the change after a request from Harbormaster John Rendon, who said it was needed after a lease and seasonal liquor license were approved.

Rendon says the change is minimal.

“There still will be no sale or use of alcohol on any town landing, float, pier, building or parking area under the jurisdiction of the town,” Rendon said.

He said the regulation change is in place to reflect that there is a new facility that will now run a seasonal food and beverage service.

The change also received unanimous support from the town’s Water Ways Committee.

Resident Mary Anderson was opposed to the change.

“I’m just appaulled that it has gotten this far,” Anderson said.

Anderson said the eatery that has been approved does not resemble what was agreed upon at town meeting.

“I know a snack shack from a restaurant when I see it,” Anderson said. “I took a peak there and that is a full restaurant. The only difference is the seats are outside. There are 70 seats.”

Anderson said parking will also be a disaster as visitors will remain there too long drinking beer and wine.

“There is nothing in that snack shack that you can take on a boat,” Anderson said. “It either requires silverware or it’s hot and by the time we get out to Monomoy you can forget it.”

Former Selectman Julie Kavanagh said the board and town meeting voted for a snack shack and that is what Dockside is.

“I think a restaurant is indoors and this is a snack shack,” Kavanagh said.

She also visited the shack and enjoyed a beer and the view.

“The seating is simple in the sense that you can sit there. You can have a beer. You can have a burger. You can have a sandwich. You can have a hotdog,” Kavanagh said. “Or if you would rather not you can actually just sit there.”
