Harwich Selectmen Approve of Winter Boat Storage

HARWICH – The Town of Harwich is considering a plan to allow winter boat storage in the parking lot of Saquatucket Harbor.

The suggestion was brought to town officials by Harbormaster John Rendon who said a number of boat owners have reached out to him citing a lack of local storage sites for deep-draft boats and sailboats.

“There is a need for winter boat storage for large boats, deep draft boats, sailboats that can go over the road,” explained Rendon,

“The space is just not there.”

Several of these owners appeared before Harwich selectmen earlier this month to discuss the lack of storage options in the area.

“I believe between Harwich and Chatham alone there are probably 30 to 50 potential customers for the service,” said boat owner Paul Duffy, “That probably adds up to several tens of thousands of dollars worth of revenue for the harbor that is now sitting as empty lots in the winter.”

Large, or tall-masted boats are left to seek storage in Falmouth, or as far away as New Bedford or Newport, leading to transportation concerns.

In the end selectmen expressed interest in pursuing leasing options with local boatyards for storage at the Saquatucket property. A vote to seek FRPs passed by a vote of 3 to two.
