Harwich Selectmen Approve Slip Transfer for Freedom Ferry

HARWICH – Selectmen in Harwich recently approved the transfer of the ferry slip at Saquatucket Harbor for the Freedom Ferry.

The move all but finalizes the sale of the vessel from Alan McMullen of Freedom Cruise Line, Inc. to Jack Sheeran.

Sheeran said operations between the Harbor and Nantucket will remain the same for the Freedom Ferry’s 25th season.

“The staff is going to stay the same. The schedule is going to stay the same, which is regulated through the Steamship Authority,” Sheeran said.

“And we are going to stay in the same spot where we go in Nantucket at the Nantucket Boat Basin.”

Selectmen also approved the transfer of the vessel’s Class F permit, which allows the ferry to take on fuel from an authorized tank wagon at the town-owned property.

Sheeran is also purchasing real estate from McMullen on Route 28 across from the harbor.

“The future for Saquatucket Harbor is very bright,” Sheeran said.

“I’m looking forward to being part of this harbor plan.”
