HARWICH – Selectmen in Harwich recently approved recreational boat docking and fees for the winter at the newly renovated Saquatucket Harbor.
The rate of $24 per foot will now be in place between November 15 and May 1.
The harbor can now support 60, 40-foot slips and 70, 30-foot slips. About 30 slips are filled regularly with marina-permitted commercial vessels and visiting commercial boats.
“Now that we have a new marina with very sturdy, stable docks and new Greenheart piles we have significant capacity for recreational boaters if they want to stay in the water year-round,” said John Rendon, the Harwich Harbormaster.
Rendon said every year he gets requests from recreational boaters who are interested in keeping their boats in the water.
“I don’t think it will be heavy use for the first year or so but I do think people will take advantage of it,” he said.
Priority will be given to commercial boats during the winter.
Rendon said more boats operating in and around the harbor will make it easier to keep ice from building up and keep birds away from the docks.
The new fee takes place immediately.
