Harwich Selectmen Get Update on Successful Cultural Center

HARWICH – Selectmen in Harwich were recently provided an update on the success of the Harwich Cultural Center.

Community Center Director Carolyn Carey said there is a 21-person wait-list to rent the 28 classrooms in the former Harwich Middle School, which are being occupied by local artists.

Carey says they are also trying to find organizations to use underutilized spaces in the building.

“We have worked with quite a few different people – there are some dance studios we are reaching out to – to try to get people in the auditorium or the cafeteria area,” said Carey.

The town is also looking to upgrade three portable classrooms for additional rental space.

The town generates $9,500 per month from the classrooms with more being generated from recreational fees.

Carey said there are some tenants who are leaving but those rooms will continue to be filled.

“All the rooms are full and will remain full,” Carey said.

The town is also looking into possible internet options for the center, along with a possible name change after a request from the non-profit Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth.
