HCT Hosts Three Walk Series Exploring Native Monomoyick Territory

Charles BurkeHARWICH – Want to know what life was like for a native Monomoyick in the 1600s?

Join 12th generation Cape Codder Todd Kelley and native Wampanoag Marcus Hendricks to explore Monomoyick Native American territory that has been preserved as conservation land on the Lower Cape.

The unique series of three guided walks is sponsored by the land trusts of Harwich, Chatham and Orleans as well as the Native Land Conservancy.

The cost for the series is $45 and advance registration and payment are required as space is limited.

The first walk takes place on September 11 from 10 a.m. to noon in West Chatham.

Participants will walk the barrier beach at Ragged Neck and learn about Champlain’s arrival to Stage Harbor in 1606.

On September 18 in East Harwich, the second walk will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and participants will explore the land once known as Captain Jeethro’s farm and visit the feasting site overlook that Squanto and Bradford likely visited when they came into Pleasant Bay to negotiate for corn in 1622.

And the third walk will take place on September 25 in South Orleans from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. where participants will walk the short trail at Paw Wah Point and learn how this area became known as Portanimicut just after the Nauset Purchase of 1643.
