HARWICH – The Harwich Conservation Trust hosted its annual meeting this week and named its 2016 Conservationist of the Year, along with expressing its interest in acquiring a 17-acre Monomoy River/Muddy Creek parcel.
The organization named The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts as the HCT’s Conservationist of the Year.
HCT President Tom Evans described the compact as a quiet, behind the scenes, heroic partner in preserving land.
The compact was founded in 1986 and assists 25 member land trusts and watershed organizations. These organizations have preserved more than 8,000 acres of land across the Cape.
HCT Executive Director Michael Lach also stressed the importance of the $1.6 million campaign to purchase the Monomoy River parcel, which includes 1,400 feet of shoreline and flows into Pleasant Bay. He said if the parcel is not preserved, it could become a 12-lot subdivision.
HCT is also starting a new giving initiative called “Help Build the Nest” which is an endeavor to grow an endowment to enable the organization to save and steward land over time.
The organization also honored the organizers of the annual Tour de Trash event as its 2016 Volunteer Group of the Year. Each spring volunteers spread out across town and clean up litter and recyclables from beaches, trails, bike paths and roadways.
