Head of Massachusetts State Police Retiring, Successor Named

STATE POLICEBOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts State Police are getting a new leader.

Col. Timothy Alben announced Wednesday he is retiring after three decades with the state’s top law enforcement agency. Gov. Charlie Baker named Maj. Richard McKeon to succeed Alben as of Sunday.

Alben, who was appointed to the job in 2012 by Gov. Deval Patrick, led the state police during the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.

McKeon is deputy commander of the Investigative Services division, where he also had a major role in Marathon bombings investigation. He previously led state police detectives assigned to the Worcester district attorney’s office.

Both men have been with the state police since 1982.

Alben is an East Longmeadow native whose father also was state trooper. He commanded the Field Services division before being appointed superintendent.
