Heritage Museums and Gardens Creates Edible Garden with Forestdale School

GardenSANDWICH – Students at the Forestdale School worked with Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich to plant a vegetable garden at the school.

Around 180 students in Grade 1 participated in preparing the garden.

The garden is the result of a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council that helps students learn about all the aspects of growing edibles and how they will harvest their product.

“By connecting young children to their environment in a project where they can quite literally, enjoy the fruits of their labors, we deepen their understanding of what it means to be good stewards of the land,” said Heritage Museums and Gardens CEO Ellen Spear.

According to the grant application, student skills utilized in the project include creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving and global awareness.

In addition to classroom and garden activities, students are also learning about, and growing, a healthy diet, including peas, heirloom tomatoes and lettuce.
