SANDWICH – Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich will seek a special permit from the town in an effort to reopen its ropes challenge course.
The Adventure Park was shut down following a court ruling last year that found the facility did not fall under exemptions from certain zoning regulations.
Heritage opted not to appeal the decision, and will instead seek the special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals.
“We would like to thank the community at large for being so very supportive of The Adventure Park,” said President and CEO Anne Scott-Putney in a statement.
“Heritage is proud to be based in Sandwich and to provide the Cape community with this one-of-a-kind experience, which is designed to bring the museum further into the 21st century in terms of outdoor discovery, education and learning.”
Several neighbors opposed the plan, citing traffic and property value concerns.
The park originally opened in June, 2014 and is situated on approximately four acres of land.
“We have seen the joy of exploration and the pride of those that have overcome obstacles while challenging themselves on the ropes courses, said Scott-Putney.
“The Adventure Park is something we strongly believe in and we thank the community again for being so supportive of us and the experience.”
Each course features approximately 12-14 elements, including tunnels, moving planks, zip lines, rope walks, and similar features.
A statement from the museum said they will invite neighbors to a meeting to share its plans, and looks forward to submitting the special permit application shortly thereafter.
