Heritage Museums & Gardens “CUT! Costume and the Cinema” exhibit features 43 costumes worn by stars of the silver sceen.
SANDWICH – Spring is here on Cape Cod and the change of season means the opening of Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich.
The new exhibit “CUT! Costume and the Cinema” will feature a series of movie sets that will show off 43 costumes worn by Hollwood’s biggest stars.
Heritage Museums & Gardens President and CEO Ellen Spear previewed the exhibit Tuesday.
“What we tried to do is for each platform that features some costumes to give you an idea what the movie set might be like and how integral each costume is to setting the scene,” she said.
The costumes will highlight the glamour, luxury and artistry of cinematic fashion.
“You are going to see Johnny Depp standing in the center of a platform in front of the sails of ship with his ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ getup on,” Spears said. “You are going to see costumes worn by Scarlet Johanssen – by Kate Winslet. You are going to see a beautiful ball gown that was featured in the movie ‘Phantom of the Opera.’”
The exhibit also features film clips and pictures of stars, before and after.
“What fascinated us is the absolute standard of authenticity that’s used even if a costume is just featured for five seconds in a movie,” Spear said.
Heritage’s “Driven to Collect” antique American car collection will feature three new additions.
The museum has acquired a 1936 Cord, which is the first car that featured peekaboo headlights.
The exhibit was also loaned two cars from Wareham resident Jack Rosen: a 1934 Derby Bentley and a 1955 MG TF 1500.
Heritage’s antique car collection now includes 40 cars which were made between 1899 and 1962.
“You’ll see a great selection of that collection here as well as the two loaned vehicles,” said Jennifer Madden, Heritages Director of Collections and Exhibitions. “Every year we rotate our cars that are on display between the exhibit gallery and collection storage so you’ll always see something different.”
An art installation of maps that are made from recycled license plates will be on display. The work is by artist Stephen Blyth.
The Adventure Park at Heritage, which includes five different aerial trails between the treetops, will also open on Saturday.
