Heritage to Open Gardens Aglow Next Week

SANDWICH – ‘Tis the season and that means the return of Gardens Aglow at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich.

The festive event returns next week and takes place over 15 nights through the end of December.

Gardens Aglow will turn Heritage’s acres of gardens and woodlands into a twinkling wonderland.

It also features carousel rides, performances, Santa visits, marshmallow roasts and more.

Heritage Director of Programming Heather Mead said Gardens Aglow has something for everyone.

“The gardens look so incredibly different and equally beautiful in the winter as they do in the spring peak season that people think of with our rhododendron or in the summer with our hydrangeas,” Mead said.

Director of Horticulture and Facilities Management Les Lutz said the goal of Gardens Aglow is to highlight the natural beauty of the gardens.

“Though the summer blooms get all the attention, the holiday lighting highlights the magical nature of the trees and gardens,” he said.

There are a few spots along the outdoor walk where people can stop and warm up.

“What better way to do it than toasting marshmallows and making a S’more kit,” Mead said. “It is definitely a favorite.”

Gardens Aglow will also feature carolers on select Fridays: November 29, and December 13, 20 and 27.

Family can also build their own “igloo” or “ice” sculpture in the family activity area – The Polar Playspace. It is at the Parade Field with a warming tent. Cape Cod Donuts food truck will be selling fresh donuts and hot apple cider each evening.

There will also be a Reindeer Scavenger Hunt for young visitors.

The “Heritage Holiday Express” features an expanded double track G-scale model train traveling through replicas of the Sagamore Bridge, the Cape Cod Railroad Bridge and the George Washington Bridge.

The bridges are suspended seven feet above the floor in the Special Exhibitions Gallery and are made of natural elements such as moss, twigs, and branches gathered from the Heritage grounds.

Music and dance performances, with a holiday theme, will be held in the J.K. Lilly III Automobile Gallery every night at 7 p.m.

Eyes 4 Ice will demonstrate ice carving in front of the Old East Mill each Saturday.

The antique carousel will be decked with festive trimming for holiday rides.

Santa will meet with families for pictures in a 1913 Ford Model T.

Soup, hot dogs, turkey wraps, Christmas Whoopie pies, chocolate chip cookies, S’mores kits, gingerbread men, hot chocolate, mulled wine, soda, cider and coffee will be served at the Magnolia Café.

Mead said the event is perfect for couples on a date night to multi-generational families making holiday memories.

Gardens Aglow is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. from Friday, November 29 through Sunday, December 29.

More information and tickets are available at heritagemuseums.org.

There is a limit on attendance each evening and Heritage encourages visitors to purchase tickets online in advance.

Due to limited parking, additional parking will be available for ticketed customers in the parking lot behind the Henry T. Wing School on Water Street on November 29 and 30, and December 7, 14, 21 and 22.

A shuttle will be operating on a continuous loop between the school and Heritage from 4 p.m. through 9 p.m.
