Herring Begin to Run in Local Waters

MARSTONS MILLS – River Herring are making their return to local rivers and streams for the spawning season.

NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center researcher Ruth Haas-Castro began counting herring at the beginning of the month at Mill Pond in Marstons Mills as they run through May and sometimes into June.

Haas Castro did not see any herring until April 14 due to the colder weather. The fish require water to be at least 52 degrees to run.
