Nobska Lighthouse in Falmouth
WOODS HOLE – The first of a two phase restoration project at the Nobska Light Station is underway, and supporters of the 141-year-old structure recently held a ceremony to mark the occasion.
The lighthouse has been a Woods Hole fixture since 1876 and nonprofit group Friends of Nobska Light wanted to show its appreciation for everyone who supported this project.
“This was a starting off point for us and thanking of the public officials and other people who have been supporters for a long time,” said Catherine Bumpus, Friends of Nobska’s Executive Director.
The first phase will address corrosion issues and broken glass, and the cast iron structure will also get a new coat of paint.
Nobska Light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so for many, the restoration work will go unnoticed.
“If you just drive by and glance at it, you shouldn’t see anything that looks very different,” Bumpus said. “Because it’s historic restoration and we’re keeping it the same color, and the same paint, and all the same style.”
The restoration is expected to be completed by November and planning for the second phase, which includes turning the lightkeeper’s house into a maritime museum is already underway.
