Holiday Wreaths To Be Placed At National Cemetery

cemetery02BOURNE – Volunteers will honor soldiers laid to rest at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne today by placing thousands of holiday wreaths on their grave sites today.

The event is apart of an annual nationwide effort to honor soldiers during the holiday season by the Wreaths Across American campaign. Over 700,000 wreaths were laid at 1,000 locations last year, including 5,000 in Bourne.

This year’s ceremony begins at noon and includes a presentation and speech from Gold Star mother Kae McGuire.

“The mantra of Wreaths Across America is to honor, respect and teach, obviously by us doing this, that’s as much as honor as you can possibly give,” said organizer Sgt. Dennis Mills with the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Joint Base Cape Cod. “Especially in the holiday season, for folks to look out there and see that, it’s fantastic.”

Volunteers are needed to assist in the wreath laying effort.

Wreaths Across America was started by Morrill Worcester in 1992 as a national effort and has grown to include veterans cemeteries across the country.
