BOSTON – State Representative Timothy Whelan (R-Brewster) has announced that the ongoing House budget debate has resulted in the inclusion of $50,000 in state funding for the newly established Cape Cod Municipal Police Training Academy.
The academy, to be located at Joint Base Cape Cod, was approved recently by the Massachusetts Police Training Council and will begin it’s first training academy of new officers on July 8th.
“This funding will go a long way toward helping the academy serve our local municipal police training needs here on Cape Cod and beyond”, said academy Director Peter Carnes.
“We are grateful for the support not only of our local municipalities, but also the strong support we have received from the Commonwealth.”
The Cape Cod Municipal Police Academy’s first training class is already full, with 45 student officers scheduled to attend. Twenty-five of the student officers are from Cape Cod and the Islands departments, according to academy Deputy Director Wayne Sampson.
“I am grateful for the full support and co-sponsorship of my House colleagues from the Cape & Islands legislative delegation in seeking this funding through the budget amendment my office filed”, Rep. Whelan said in a statement.
“There is a statewide backlog of academy slots for newly hired officers that our local police chiefs have been wrestling with and the establishment of this academy, and this important funding, will help solve these issues while offering a significant savings for our local taxpayers in reduced municipal expenses by keeping this training local.”
Upon conclusion of House budget debate, the State Senate will then take up the Fiscal Year 2020 budget next month.
