House to take Up $360M Spending Bill

massachusetts state houseBOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts House is set to take up a $360 million appropriations bill during its first formal session since the summer recess.

House leaders say the bill, set for debate on Wednesday, will allow the state to close the books on the most recent fiscal year that ended in July.

House Ways and Means chairman Brian Dempsey says the plan calls for $248 million in net spending after federal reimbursements.

It includes $27 million for ongoing efforts to stem the state’s opioid abuse crisis.

Dempsey says the bill also returns $75 million that had been withdrawn from the state’s so-called rainy day fund.

The state ended the fiscal year with a surplus after Gov. Charlie Baker and lawmakers moved to plug a projected $765 million deficit.
